How you’re fueling the future

Hunger…here?

True story. In Washington, 1 in 5 kids is regularly at risk of going hungry. Hungry.

Federal funds exist to feed these kids, but schools and school districts lack the staff, resources, and tools to put those funds to work.

Your dollars are allowing us to take this issue on in a big new way—and keep those federal dollars from going unused. It’s called the Fuel Your Future Campaign, sponsored by the Seattle Seahawks and Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign. Earlier this year, No Kid Hungry selected United Way of King County as one of six organizations nationwide to receive a grant through the Social Innovation Fund. We officially kicked it off at the Day of Caring volunteer party on Sept. 15.

Are you as hunger-savvy as you think you are? See if you’re smarter than our Facebook quiz (and Like us while you’re there!).

  1. Summer meals. With your help, we’ve been providing kids with free meals and learning activities for years. This most recent summer saw 80 AmeriCorps members and other volunteers feeding 600,000+ free meals at parks and community centers. That’s on top of the million+ meals of the previous two summers. Summer hunger can’t hold us!
  2. AmeriCorps members in schools. By October, 10 schools in south King County will have two AmeriCorps members each. They’ll provide nutrition education and make eating breakfast at school easier, more convenient and less tied to stigma. They’ll also pinpoint how each of these schools can feed more students breakfast, lunch and after-school suppers, as well as link families to food banks, food stamps and other available support. Phew. They will be busy for sure.
  3. Breakfast Challenge. Starting this November, schools and districts will challenge each other to feed more students. Who knows, maybe we’ll dub it No-Hunger November. A little competition could go a long way in putting a stop to rumbling tummies.

We’re excited about Fuel Your Future. You should be too—this is something big your dollars are doing to keep families stable and cut the number of food-insecure kids by 50%. Let’s do this.
