PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
United Way of King County’s vision is to build a community where people have homes, students graduate, and families are financially stable. As part of our work to end poverty, we are committed to ensuring that all children have access to healthy food in the places where they live, learn, and play.
United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance Washington (UTOPIA Washington) is a grassroots organization dedicated to serving communities in South King County through advocacy, cultural programming, and food security initiatives.
The Food Security AmeriCorps team is a dynamic cohort of direct service AmeriCorps members working in partnership with United Way staff, AmeriCorps HungerCorps members, school districts, and community-based organizations to connect families with the food they need. As a member, you will serve with partner organizations—including food banks, collectives, and community anti-hunger organizations—all working to increase food security in our community.
MEMBER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The HungerCorps Member, under the guidance of the Community Services Director, will support the ongoing development of UTOPIA Washington’s Food Access Network program. This position will assist in expanding food access initiatives, improving community outreach, and addressing barriers to healthy food options. The HungerCorps Member will help educate and organize efforts to enhance food security and resource availability for community members.
- Support the implementation and management of, but not limited to, UTOPIA Washington’s Food Access Network Program.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and sustaining UTOPIA Washington’s food and nutrition strategic policy, system, and environmental change initiatives designed to improve food access.
- Foster community partnerships and create sustainable systems for collaborative engagement.
- Develop and steward relationships with community organizations, leaders, and program participants to support consultation on resource access and program development.
- Maintain data management infrastructure for UTOPIA Washington and support community members’ use of data.
- Participate in program strategy, planning, tracking, and reporting, as well as staff meetings.
- Assist in organizing statewide and county-level events.
- Other duties as assigned by the Community Services Director or Food Access Network Program Manager.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- Must have a valid driver’s license needed to travel to and from various locations, but limited to, UTOPIA Washington’s Fa’atoaga (Farms) in Kent and Puyallup.
- Ability to speak, read, and write in English; strong candidates may have additional language skills.
- An ability to communicate with people or groups with varying perspectives or positions.
- Strong social justice analysis, knowledge of systemic systems of oppression, and lived experience of the power of community organizing to transform lives and communities.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Self-Starter with a strong desire to learn.
- Any farming or gardening experience
- Two years of community organizing and/or cultural work, especially within the LGBTQI+ and/or Pacific Islander communities. Equivalent experience with facilitation or community engagement will be considered
As a member of this cohort, you will be supported with a robust orientation, ongoing professional development opportunities, trainings, check-ins, and the tools and resources you need to succeed. Members will walk away from their year of service with an understanding of on-the-ground food security work, anti-hunger strategies, and methods for increasing food access across the community.
This is a full-time position, and members will serve approximately 40 hours per week for the duration of their service term. Members may occasionally move or lift boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. This position may involve service in outdoor weather conditions and may require standing, walking, or moving around the service location for up to four hours at a time.

- Bi-weekly stipend of $1385.18 (pre-tax)
- Loan deferment and payment of interest accrued on qualified student loans during your service term
- Eligible to receive Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($3,697.50) after successful completion of your service term

ELIGIBILITY:
- Must be over 18 years old on the first day of service
- Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the United States. Unfortunately F1 visas are not sufficient.
- Must be available 40 hours per week through August 2025. Exact hours may vary by site placement, but will primarily be Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Must undergo a Washington State Patrol background check, FBI background check and National Sex Offender Registry Check, plus state of residence background check if not currently living in Washington
