United Way’s Support Transforms National Service Experiences

vinnieVinnie is the Summer Meals Promotion Specialist AmeriCorps VISTA at WithIn Reach. She fights poverty by increasing awareness of the Summer Meals program, which connects more low-income families to meal resources. Facing struggles during her service year, she looked to the support of United Way.

My work to increase the awareness of the Summer Meals program has given me the personal and professional skills to continue my career in nonprofit work. Though my service year has been exceptionally meaningful, it was not without struggle.

I decided to meet with my supervisor at United Way when I faced a few roadblocks in my project. After offering me a safe space to talk and asking thoughtful questions, my supervisor offered creative ideas about how I could utilize my skills and experiences to create the change I wanted to see. She has continually guided me as I set and reach personal and professional goals. She has helped me realize my full potential and take advantage of the opportunities that AmeriCorps VISTA offers. I feel energized and excited to bring my ideas to life, during both my service year, and future career. United Way’s exceptional support and guidance created a more meaningful service year for me.

While at first I was hesitant to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA, it was definitely worth it. My year of National Service has contributed significantly to my personal and professional growth. It has bolstered my determination to pursue a career in the nonprofit field. Knowing the impact that National Service and United Way has had on my life, I know it will be impactful for others as well!
