Our children are the future of our communities and the state of the world tomorrow. That's why one of the key focuses of United Way of King County is to ensure every child the best possible start in life, from the basics of getting along with others, to support with school, to a firm foundation of good health. Often it means lending a hand to parents so they can turn around and provide their kids with the nurturing they need, creating a continuous positive cycle.
Maritza and Pedro are typical kids. Maritza is a doting big sister, always watching out for her energetic younger brother. She loves reading and coloring, and has the neatest penmanship around. Outgoing Pedro likes computer games and playing outside. Their mom, Lourdes, works seven days a week to create a good life for her children. Yet, as a single mother who speaks little English, she finds it difficult to get ahead.
The family moved into a housing development supported by New Futures, a United Way of King County grantee and neighborhood-based organization that provides assistance to children, families and communities. Their babysitter suggested that Lourdes enroll Maritza and Pedro in the on-site after-school program offered by the agency. Through the children, a world of assistance opened up to the family.
In the after-school program, the two have discovered a friendly place where they receive a warm welcome and a healthy mid-day snack. In the fun, relaxed atmosphere of the community center, they practice their social skills and computer knowledge. "I like what they teach us," Maritza says with a shy smile, "And I like playing games and hanging out with my friends."
Their schoolwork is also improving with help from the Homework Club, a daily tutoring program. "I have seen a lot of benefits," Lourdes says gratefully. "I know my kids are doing their homework right. Previously it was so difficult, I didn't understand, so I couldn't help."
Aided by a New Futures' family advocate, Lourdes has also resolved other concerns, one of which was affordable health insurance. Now she can take Maritza and Pedro to the doctor when they are ill, or for regular check ups and shots.
Lourdes, Maritza and Pedro have also made a connection to a community that supports their dreams of success. "As immigrants, we feel more secure knowing there are places to turn to," Lourdes says. United Way of King County invests in programs that help families with all of their needs, building stronger communities from the kids on up.
When asked what she looks forward to for the future of her children, Lourdes smiles. "I hope that they will be good kids…that's what I work for."
