School readiness
The achievement gap starts before school does. That's why United Way of King County is committed to helping kids right from the start.
Studies show that getting kids ready for school is the most effective way to support improved academic outcomes in the K - 12 system and prevent costly societal problems such as unemployment and crime. And the best way to get kids ready for school is to make sure they are nurtured from birth and given high quality care, whether it's at home, with friends or neighbors, or at a child care center.
Together, with your generous support of time and money, we can achieve our vision of making sure every child in King County gets the basic care and skills they need to succeed in school, and in life.
The work we do
Through strategic advocacy, financial investment, volunteer programs, collaborations, and education campaigns, we:
- Support parents and caregivers.
- Improve the quality of care and make it affordable and accessible.
- Ensure that children are healthy so they can learn.
- Measure the results so that we can ensure maximum impact.
To learn more about the specifics of how we work with direct service providers, businesses, and public and private agencies to identify and reduce the achievement gaps in early learning, read our impact plan.
What you can do
There has never been a better time to make a significant, measurable difference in the long-term outcomes of our youngest citizens. With the new Department of Early Learning and a new public-private partnership—Thrive by Five—momentum in our state for promoting early learning is at an all-time high.
